Be a Special Volunteer
To A Special Needs Child or Adult.....
in Kenya

It is a definite challenge but well worth the efforts if you are a student of Special Education.  As a child or adult living in Kenya with special needs it is difficult.  A child who deals with autism, downs syndrome, mental and emotional challenges, cerebral palsy, fetal alcohol and drug syndrome are not accepted well.  For many years these children did not make it to adulthood.  Children such as these would be killed at birth or hidden away for years.  There was shame in having a child with such disabilities.  In recent years things have been changing.

There are homes and day care facilities that are becoming available for these children and adults. Many needs are met but there just are not enough volunteers!  Volunteers are needed so that many more DD children and adults can attend day care centers in and around Nairobi.

Volunteers will be asked to work more on a one-to-one basis with a special child. These children are often very shy and need to learn that trust in companionship. The children and young adults in these facilities and homes may not speak English or not be able to speak at all. Extreme patience is necessary to work with these loving individuals. Repetitive directions and movements are often necessary in the learning process. You may be asked to help a child count or arrange beads by numbers and colors to make a necklace or work with the residents to learn life skills or even how to use a utensil with which to eat.

Whatever the challenges to these young people your efforts as a volunteer will be some of the more memorable moments in your life.  To open up that mind to a simple understanding may become a new beginning for that child.  They are as eager to learn as most children whatever the level they are capable of.

While volunteers are appreciated the compassion and dedication needed to assist in this environment is critical.  We welcome your desire to volunteer in this area and look forward to those in the Special Needs field.  As volunteer coordinators we will try to consider your assignment placement as best we  can, however we have slightly different criteria for placement in special needs.
