Trees of Significance

What is this?

The Goleta Valley Trees of Significance Google Earth Map is a compilation of significant trees in the Goleta Valley that may someday qualify as Heritage Trees. Trees of Significance Trees are defined as those trees significant to this area because of size (more than 30”), age, species and location. Heritage Trees are identified on a separate map, as are Goleta Valley Beautiful planted trees. This project was sponsored by California ReLeaf through a 2010 Urban Forestry Grant.

The designations of these trees represent the opinions of arborists with Goleta Valley Beautiful, and do not necessarily represent the opinions of governmental agencies or property owners. Current public agency programs to recognize and preserve public and private heritage trees, or trees of significance, within the Goleta Valley are limited to certain trees located within environmentally sensitive habitat areas. The preparation of this information is the first step in public discussion about identifying, caring for, and preservation of special trees located throughout the Goleta Valley. We expect this list to be refined as additional public input is received.

Instructions

To navigate the tree map, you will need the Google Earth plug-in. Click here to install the plug-in.

Click and drag to move across the map and use your mouse's scroll wheel to zoom in and out. You can also use the controls on the right side of the map. These controls will appear when you move your mouse to the right side of the map.

Each tree has been assigned a unique identification number and a marker has been placed in the exact location where the tree is actually located. Click each tree marker to view the type of tree, and if available, statistical information, a photo and additional comments. Yellow tear drop makers with a star in the middle indicate an individual Tree of Significance.

To learn more about each type of tree, visit SelecTree, a database of information about trees including photos.

If you notice any errors, including trees marked in the wrong locations, trees with mislabeled types, or trees that are no longer alive, please contact us.

Note: Site under construction. All school site trees identified and some public park and street tree sites
