The Youth and Young Adult Programs at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi consist of the following: Middle School, High School, Confirmation for Teens and Young Adult Group. Youth and Young Adult ministry is a vital segment of our Parish life, as teens are not only our future, they are our present. Keeping teens involved in faith formation, life skills training, community service, participation in the Mass, retreats and pilgrimages are just several ways the Cathedral Basilica nurtures this very important group of young people. Mentors and team members are always needed!
Our Parish offers a comprehensive Catholic model of preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation that helps teens grow close to Christ and His Church. This program called Oneight, draws young people into a deeper faith that transforms their hearts and changes their lives. This program is based n creative and experiential catechetical methods and follow the flow of Liturgy: Gather, Proclaim, Break and Send. Confirmation is held on Sunday morning from 10:00 - 11:30 am and will begin again in September, 2012. Following class, the teens will attend the Noon Mass with their family. Their catechesis will continue with Life Teen following the Noon Mass, from 1:30 - 3:00 pm. (See more information regarding Life Teen below). All sessions will take place in the former Cathedral School located on the corner of Alameda and Paseo de Peralta.

Theme based and dealing with issues that teens are hungry for, Life Teen is built on the four pillars of faith. The Life Teen program views teenageers as gifts to the Church, and not merely our future, but our present. The focus of Life Teen is the challenge to make disciples of Christ out of our youth, in a format that makes them hungry for more! The Life Teen program is designed to reach out, deal with and meet the needs of today's teens.

This year, in addition to 'A Call to Faith,' a thematic approach to young adolescent catechesis, we are adding Theology of The Body, Middle School Edition.
More than ever, young adolescents need to know and rely upon their faith as they navigate the changes and challenges of life today. Parents, pastors, catechists, and youth ministry leaders all agree that this age presents distinctive challenges and rich opportunities for faith formation.

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi Santa Fe, New Mexico
Updated 8-28-07
Introduction:
The Saint Francis Cathedral Basilica Community recognizes the cultural values that our sister and brother Hispanic - Americans hold dear and have a deep respect for their celebrations.
Many families hold to the tradition of celebration the fifteenth birthday of a young person. It is a time when the young person - usually a girl but not exclusive of boys - come to the parish church to ask for God's blessing upon the future.
Because it is important to remember the true purpose of this celebration and to clarify this community's expectations. these guidelines have been developed to assist parish families who wish to hold this celebration at the Saint Francis Cathedral Basilica.
Personal Requirements
- The young person's parents must be registered members of the Saint Francis Cathedral Basilica for a minimum of two (2) years.
- The young person must be an active member in the Saint Francis Cathedral Basilica youth group for at least one year and be preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation prior to having a Quinceañera celebration.
- It is expected that the young person and the participants in his or her court regularly receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation (Confession) and Eucharist (Holy Communion).
- If the young person and members of his/her "court" have not celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation for a long time, they are encouraged to do so shortly before the Quinceañera.
- In preparation of the celebration, the young person, all of his/her "court", the parents and the padrinos de bautizmo must participate in five classes of catechesis prior to the celebration.
Scheduling
- The Church Office must be contacted no later than six (6) months before the celebration date.
- Normally, Quinceañeras are scheduled for Fridays at 10AM or 12 PM. Sometimes, if availability allows, a celebration may be held on Saturdays at 10 AM or 12 PM. They cannot be celebrated on Sundays. Holy Days of Obligation or when there is another major feast planned for the Cathedral Basilica or City of Santa Fe.
- The first person the family needs to contact is the parish secretary, Anita Lopez to see if the church is available. No date will be reserved without one-half of the church fee being paid in advance. This is your deposit and it is not refundable if the event is cancelled.
- Secondly, the family will need to schedule an appointment with Gayle McGuiness, Director of Youth and Young Adult Programs to insure the young person is meeting all the necessary requirements.
- Thirdly, the family will need to meet with Maria Romero or Angie Kollasch to discuss the significance of the liturgical celebration. Maria or Angie will be the contacts to arrange the rehearsal, normally one to two days in advance of the celebration.
- When all has been discussed, then the Liturgy Office needs to be contacted to arrange the details of the liturgy.
Fees
- Church fee = $200.00
- This covers the expenses of electricity and any other costs that might be incurred for this particular celebration.
- Musician Fee = $225.00
- Since this celebration happens in the context of a Mass, the proper liturgical music is expected. many families choose to hire a Mariachi group to provide this service. If the services of the Cathedral Basilica Liturgical Staff are needed, this fee is a BASE fee which may be increased if needed for additional ministers of music and liturgy.
- Priest/Deacon Fee = Family responsibility
- To have a member of the clergy preside at this event requires a significant amount of preparation on his part. To not thank the presider, normally a priest of deacon, can be considered an insult. A small token would also be appropriate for the altar server.
Other Information
Since the Quinceañera is commonly celebrated with a Mass, there are certain other guidelines as well as suggestions to make the day as rich and reverent as it deserves to be.
- The blessings that occur during the celebration may be as varied as the family or the young person would like.
- Proper attire is necessary at all times in the Cathedral Basilica. This is especially necessary for the rehearsal and the celebration itself. Young ladies, if they are wearing a strapless dress or top must have a shawl covering their shoulders at all times. Shorts pants and jeans on young men or women is not appropriate in Church.
- No food or drink is allowed in the Cathedral Basilica at any time.
- No chewing of gum is allowed at any time.
- Proper reverence of the spaces, Sanctuary, chapels and the Main Church must be maintained at all times.
- No running or raucous behavior is allowed.
Finally, since this is a celebration of the entire Saint Francis Cathedral Basilica Community, we would strongly encourage young people to celebrate this special day with other young people who are reaching the age of fifteen at the same time. Group Quinceañera celebrations would be a true symbol of that community coming together asking for our God to shower blessings on these young women and men.
(The above policies are subject to change.)
