Day 3

The Great Debate!

Today was the day for the Great Debate. We love this activity because it involves all of the students and we are able to see such a great amount of passion from each of them. The Great Debate revolves around the following question: Which is better – Being an employee or Owning your own business? The answer, of course, is completely relative and personal, but the exercise forces the students to defend their stance. We divided the students into two main groups.  In each group we made sure to have current business owners. Then, we added individuals who are currently employees to both sides. Before they were asked to debate the question, we allowed them to work in groups and prepare their arguments.

The Great Debate is always a passionate and thought provoking activity. One thing I have learned to appreciate is the ability for the students to defend their position even when they don't believe what they are saying whole heartedly. Below you will see the students in their groups preparing their arguments and counterarguments. Then, you will see the students in action! Mexicans are GREAT AT DEBATING.

“Records....Records....Records”

Jeff Brownlow and Spencer Wilcox arrived to Puebla this morning—what a great privilege and honor for both the Academy and the students. Of course, once Jeff and Spencer arrived and introduced themselves, the students were engaged and ready to learn from each of them. Jeff ran a case study with such control and precision that it was apparent he was the expert in the room. His ability to hone in on the critical components and key concepts of the case study made for an exceptional learning experience for every single student. Though Jeff comprehended the case at the macro-scale, and could have easily applied the aspects of the case study at much deeper levels, he understood the needs of the students and focused on that which was essential for the students. Needless to say, Jeff Brownlow is a master teacher; his love for the people is evident and reflected in his patience, kindness, and words.

Spencer Wilcox also shared a phenomenal presentation with the students. His words were based on the data that he has spent hundreds of hours working on, evaluating, and understanding. He has truly become an expert on the Academy and understands it at a completely different level. I am grateful for his example, creativity, and hard work ethic.

In conclusion, today was instructive, entertaining, and motivating. The students were able to learn that there is a time and a place for employment and starting/running a business. They saw the pros and the cons of each side. Even though it was a little heated, the Great Debate was nonetheless beautiful to see the drive, the passion, the opinions, and willingness to learn. Thank you all for what you are doing to support our efforts. The students are learning more and more each day. From the first day, when they received rocks, they now have more than $600USD in cash.
